Summertime Tips for Controlling Oily Skin

As the seasons change it is important to note that changes to your current skincare routine to reflect changes in the current state of your skin, may be necessary. Swapping the cold winters months for the summer heat in the case of oily skin usually means changing out our heavier, more moisturizing products for things that are a bit more light weight and prioritizes non greasy hydration.

Oily skin is caused by an over production of sebum from our sebaceous glands. It is best to look at oily skin as something to be controlled or maintained rather than “fixed” or corrected due to the fact that often times it can be hereditary and with us from birth. Dehydration is commonly seen in people with oily skin types, using harsh stripping products to remove “excess” oil can result in removing essential oils needed to protect skin and keep it moisturized thus, leading to dehydration. Skipping moisturizer and other hydrating steps in a routine can lead to this as well.

The enhanced appearance of pores, congestion, greasy appearance and to the touch are all characteristics of oily skin. Its important to keep these things in mind when choosing products for your routine to ensure that you are not adding to an already greasy situation. Not to worry though, a skincare switch up for oily skin isn’t very complex and can be done with minimal changes depending on your current routine! Check out the summertime tips for controlling oily skin below and don’t let a little built in shine stop you from living your best life this summer season.

Summertime Tips:

  1. Avoid products and/or ingredients that strip skin of its natural oils and goodness

  2. Keep the layering of products in the AM to a minimum

  3. Moisturizer is still necessary so try an opt for an oil free version

  4. Avoid the words “mattifying” and go for oil controlling and balancing

  5. Regular exfoliation with enzymes or chemical exfoliants to keep skin free of oil build up

Remember, oily skin still needs hydration and protection. Sunscreen and a lightweight hydrating toner or serum are great ways to easily achieve balanced skin that still glows without looking or feeling greasy. Cleansing should be short and sweet, 60 seconds of manual manipulation with your finger tips is key to removing dirt, excess oil and debris without disturbing the skins protective barrier. Avoid ingredients like witch hazel and other astringents that can cause stripping (over drying) of skin.

Over exfoliation is common and early avoidable. exfoliating at minimum 2 times per week and no more than 3 times per week will help increase cell turn over. This will assist the skin in shedding dead skin cells and keeping pores clear as well as helping to fight against breakouts.
